Frequently Asked Questions
Hiring a developmental editor is a big step in your writing journey.
Below is an FAQ covering some common questions you might have before reaching out.

FAQ
What is a developmental edit?
Developmental edits are not beta reads. While beta reads can be crucial to improving your draft,
developmental editing doesn't just point out what isn't working—developmental editors
analyze your manuscript and offer actionable suggestions to improve all elements of your
story so they work seamlessly together.
I'm looking at the big picture: plot, pacing, characterization, arcs, and any other points that would
affect the overall story. All of this is laid out in an editorial letter (almost like a roadmap) to help you
edit your book to the best possible place. The critique will be detailed and comprehensive. I will not be looking at a line level, nor will I point out any grammar or spelling issues. Those types of edits should come at the end,
when you are doing final polishing of your draft to submit for querying or indie publishing.
How long is the turnaround time for a manuscript?
A full developmental edit usually has a one-month turnaround time, depending on final word
count, as I normally read the manuscript twice, making comments and suggestions within
the document during this time. Editorial letters can also be up to 25 pages long. I do not like to rush this process,
so if you are on a tight deadline, this is something to keep in mind.
A manuscript evaluation can take less time, usually two-week turnarounds, as there are no comments
made in the manuscript, but this also depends on the final word count.
How does payment work?
My prices are listed in euros, and payment is made via Stripe, where you can pay with any major credit card or
debit card. I request a 50% deposit before work begins to secure your spot on my calendar,
with the final payment due on the agreed-upon date.
All terms and conditions of payments are laid out in the contract, signed by both parties.
Do I have to sign a contract?
To proceed with an edit, both parties must sign the official contract I provide. The contract will
lay out all the terms and conditions of the project, which includes project scope, payment, AI policy, and other
terms to ensure there is no misunderstanding about the services being offered.
What kind of genres do you cover?
Genres I cover include:
Romance (all sub-genres)
Women's Literary Fiction
General Fiction
Fantasy
Romantasy
Thriller
Dystopian
Memoir
I do not read horror or any dark romance with extreme body mutilation. If your book has triggers
that you're unsure about, you can contact me and tell me more about your project.
Why do you request a video meeting before starting an edit?
Your writing is extremely personal, and I think it's truly important that you feel confident in handing over
your words to me. Discovery calls help us determine whether we are a good fit for one
another. While I spend two weeks to a month alone with your book, it is still a
collaborative process, and I want us both to feel secure in it.
Do you do a sample edit?
If you still feel unsure after the discovery call, I do offer a sample edit for the first chapter/5k words.
There is a 50€ fee for this, which will be deducted from the overall price if you choose to work with me.
